STEVE Kean fears Chris Samba is being unfairly targeted by referees due to his physical presence – and has held discussions with Mike Riley about recent decisions.

The Rovers boss has revealed he has held talks with the chief of referees about decisions that have gone against, and for, his side in recent weeks.

He was particularly disappointed by having Scott Dann’s goal wiped off at Sunderland on Sunday, after Samba was harshly penalised for a foul on Keiren Westwood.

Kean said: “We were disappointed we didn’t have a two-goal cushion after the first half at Sunderland.

“Sometimes we feel Chris Samba, because of his presence and size, attracts more attention and gets a whistle or a flag when he is not fouling anyone.”

Meanwhile Kean is adamant his side have not been affected by recent claims the club are facing a financial crisis, with the prospect of players not being paid their wages next year.

The club have already released an official statement denying these claims made by a national newspaper last Sunday and Kean insists the constant rumours don’t bother his squad.

He said: “This thing has been swiriing around for a long time. If it was new then maybe it would affect us but it has been around for so long it makes it easier.

“The players get on with their job, playing football and preparing to win. It is not a case of any article could appear to surprise us. We just get on with it. I don’t think our focus has been detracted in any way.

“We are all professional and have to get on with our job in the next two games.”
