CHRIS Stammers has been appointed the new manager of promotion pace-setters Clitheroe.

After an exceptional spell as caretaker boss, leading the Blues to third in UniBond Division One, Stammers has agreed a deal taking him to the end of the 2007/08 season.

The former Sheffield United player took charge on the eve of Clitheroe's league campaign, following the sacking of Mark Smitheringdale.

Blues vice-chairman Bob Kay insists Stammers is the right man for the job and hopes his appointment will end the club's recent large turnover in managers.

"We believe we've got the right person. Chris brings experience, excellent contacts and his development of young footballers."

"We have put Chris on a contract that will go through to the end of the 2007/08 season," said Kay.

"This is just to give a bit of integrity to him and the club.

"There's been eight managers since we've reached UniBond status. There seems to be a bit of a hire and fire reputation here.

"He eats, sleeps and breathes football. The guys love him here, even though he puts them through hard training sessions!

"He's got his UEFA A' coaching badge and has big plans for the long-term, including a youth academy."

Kay admits the Blues are playing their best and most attractive football for a long time.

He added: "Chris was given eight matches and without any doubt the guy has done great.

"The football the team is playing is exceptional and through word of mouth we want more people to come and see us.

"If we carry on in the same vein, then there is a strong chance of promotion. It is still early days though."

Stammers, who once worked as assistant boss at Burscough, has enjoyed a fantastic start at Shawbridge, guiding his side to five league wins in seven matches.
