CHRIS McCann has been backed to blossom into his role as Clarets captain.

With Burnley struggling to find form this season, fans have voiced concerns that the weight of responsibility has affected the midfielder’s performances.

But assistant manager Jason Tindall doesn’t believe McCann’s additional duties will become a burden.

“Chris McCann’s a fantastic player and he’s handling it great,” he said ahead of this afternoon’s visit of league leaders Southampton.

“His performances are always honest and works his socks off and gives everything he can for the team.”

And Tindall insisted leaving the Dubliner out of the last two Carling Cup line-ups was not a reflection of his performances, but more a means of protecting their lynchpin following his previous injury problems.

“We’re delighted with Chris but at the same time for certain games like the cup games you have to manage him right and be a little bit careful because he's been out for so long and he's only recently come back,” said Eddie Howe’s right hand man.

After having much of the Premier League season written off with a recurring knee problem, McCann missed the bulk of last season, after breaking down again in the summer and requiring reconstructive surgery.

He made a goalscoring return to action at Derby County in April, going on to complete a full pre-season and take the captain’s armband after signing a new two-year deal.

But Tindall insists they still need to be cautious with McCann following a string of serious injuries.

“He was unlucky to be out for as long as he was but he's come back great and we're delighted with him,” said Tindall, who, like Howe, had his own playing career cut short by injury.

“The last thing we want is for Chris to break down so when we get the opportunity to be a bit careful with him that's what we need to do to make sure he stays fit for us.”
