NEW Burnley captain Chris McCann admitted he never considered himself skipper material, but he is determined to lead the Clarets to glory this season.

Having just turned 24, the popular midfielder is among the youngest to take up the captain’s armband at Turf Moor.

But he believes the responsibility will help him come of age.

“It’s a bit surreal really. I never thought I’d be captain of the football club,” he said.

“It’s great for the gaffer to put his trust in me on the field. It’s a nice honour.

“It’s a big achievement and I’m proud of that, being so young to be captain when there are other players there that are older and more experienced me like Brian Jensen, who’s been here years, and Michael Duff and Wade Elliott, who are a lot older than me and a lot more experienced than I am.

“To be given the responsibility is brilliant.

“I’m not going to complain. I have a bigger job to do now.

“I’ve got to try to lead the guys by example and hopefully do my bit on the field and try to get us back in the Premier League.”
