BURNLEY are hoping to sign a striker and complete a deal for Keith Treacy before the opening game of the season on Saturday.

Treacy underwent a medical yesterday after Burnley agreed a fee with Preston at the weekend.

The deal is expected to go through ahead of the opener against Watford, even though personal terms had not been finalised as the Lancashire Telegraph went to press last night.

The Clarets have been working hard to improve their squad in recent days and Peterborough have revealed that they turned down two bids from Burmley for George Boyd.

The Clarets have been in the market for a left-winger and moved for Posh’s wide man Boyd – previously linked with the Clarets last summer.

Peterborough have claimed they turned down an initial offer of £1.5m before also rejecting a deal that included a player in exchange.

Posh director of football Barry Fry said: “Burnley were keen on George, but they haven’t met our valuation and we weren’t interested in a player exchange.”

It is understood any interest in the Scot is now over, though, with Treacy set to sign instead.

The Clarets are said to have agreed a fee of between £750,000 and £800,000 with Preston for Treacy, with part of the deal going to his former club Blackburn Rovers because of a sell-on clause.

The 22-year-old Irish winger joined Preston from Rovers last year after graduating from Blackburn’s youth team.

Howe also remains keen to bring in at least one more player before Saturday’s Turf Moor clash, and is eager to sign a striker after selling Chris Iwelumo to Watford a fortnight ago.
