SEAN McConville came back to haunt Accrington Stanley after giving Stockport County victory in the Reds’ final pre-season friendly on Saturday.

McConville controversially opted to turn down a new deal from Stanley and instead step down a league to join non-league Stockport last month after being offered a large increase on his salary by the Blue Square Premier side.

And the forward netted the winner from the penalty spot in Saturday’s friendly after being felled in the area in the 33rd minute.

Reds boss John Coleman again handed appearances to a number of trialists – including Darwen-born midfielder Danny Pilkington, younger brother of Norwich’s Anthony Pilkington, ex-Coventry youngster Joel Grandison and fellow forward Nat Taylor, the former Accrington and Rossendale College student.

Skipper Andy Procter made his first appearance of pre-season after a knee injury as he looked to prove his fitness ahead of Saturday’s opening game of the League Two season at Northampton.

Ex-Stanley midfielder John Miles appeared as a second-half substitute for Stockport.
