ACCRINGTON’S Nikki Foster insists she will try to savour the occasion as she prepares for her first round at the Ricoh Women’s British Open in Scotland today.

The 19-year-old Pleasington star is one of six amateurs in the 148-strong field at Carnoustie that contains some of the great names in women’s golf.

Among the star names include former champions, Taiwan’s Yani Tseng and Scotland’s Catriona Matthews, along with USA star Michelle Wie and England’s most accomplished golfer of the modern era, seven-times Ladies European Tour winner Laura Davies.

Foster kicks off her opening round at 2.44pm this afternoon, grouped with America’s Jane Park and Chella Choi of South Korea. Her second round on Friday is at 9.59am.

“It’s fantastic to be playing against the best golfers in the world,” said Foster. “I’ll try and meet up with a few of them while I’m here.”

“I hope I do myself justice. I just want to enjoy the occasion and play my best. I’m just excited about it.”

Foster went to local final qualifying on Monday to earn the right to test herself against the world’s best.

At nearby Panmure, the Lancashire and England international made few mistakes with just two bogeys on her card.

"She was two under after four and, despite dropping a shot on the sixth, was still two-under at the turn.

She had one birdie and one bogey on the homeward half.

Foster’s father, Trevor, who once led the Open Championship in 1988 at Royal Lytham and St Annes, will be caddying her around Carnoustie.
