FATHER and daughter Steve and Hazel Johnson both represented the Association of North West Car Clubs in the Fern Furnishing Autotest on Sunday.

Nineteen-year-old Hazel, from Accrington, was competing in her first MSA British Autotest Championship event and finished third in her class at Sherburn Proving Ground, east of Leeds.

Father Steve is a seasoned autotest driver and was second in the class after being named captain of the ANWCC’s A team.

The A team finished fourth at the event, which was hosted by Alwoodley Motor Club, while Hazel helped the B team to fifth.

“This was my daughter’s first event,” said Steve.

“She was going to compete in the white Nissan Micra but it didn’t have power steering. But she went for it in the Black Micra and did very well.

“I was in the white Micra but our team had a penalty because in the seventh test the drive shaft broke, although it was repaired in 10 minutes and I was able to continue.”

The Under 17 Motor Club Northwest, working together with Accrington Motor Sport Club, will host the production car autotest at Blackburn and Darwen Services on August 27 and 28.
