CHORLEY’S Andrew Palmer is well on course to reach the matchplay stages of the English Amateur Championships after a fantastic opening round at Woburn yesterday.
Palmer struck a three-under-par 69 to put him in the leader-board’s top 10.
Chorley-based Tom Stuart, 19, carded 73 to put him among the chasing pack, while Pleasington duo Jon Hurst and Sean Nicholls hit opening rounds of 76. Hurst-Green based Mark Young faces an uphill task after firing a 78.
The format for the first two days of the championship is 36-hole stroke-play.
The lowest 64 scores then enter the matchplay stage.
