LUCY Lennon set a new record as she helped St Augustine’s finally topple Hollins High as athletics champions of Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley.

But it was a record much closer to home that she was really interested in.

Despite running to a best ever time of 2mins 26.1secs to win the Year Nine 800m, Lennon kept up the feat of being crowned girl inter town champion in every year – a record elder sister Leigh also managed competing in the neighbouring Blackburn with Darwen championships.

“I think this was the record Lucy really wanted,” joked dad Don, an athletics coach who is also chairman of the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley School Sports Association. “I’m delighted for her because she’s got a lot to live up to with her sister doing so well.

Leigh, (right) aged 20, is one of the brightest young middle distance talents in the country with a clutch of national and regional titles. But she also champion girl every year while studying at Witton Park High – something Lucy is looking to emulate.

“Lucy wants to be inter champion every year just like Leigh did,” added Lennon senior.

“But setting a new record in the 800m is great for her.”
