THE Burgess brothers are preparing to push each other through the pain barrier again in another show of cycling endurance.

Following last year’s charity-raising road trip from London to Paris, brothers David and Stephen are going further second time around as they plan to cover the 360 miles from London to Brussels in just three days.

The pair will be part of a team who will be raising funds for Action Medical Research when they set off next month. The team of riders also includes John Monks from Wilpshire and Gareth Johnson from Padiham.

The Burgess brothers, both from Clitheroe, are hoping to raise more than £3,000 between them – a target they reached last year.

They have already raised £1,600 ahead of the Three Cities Challenge from London to Amsterdam and then Brussels which they will begin on Wednesday, August 31.

“We know it is going to be tougher, harder and further than last year but our training is going really well,” said David a former chairman and manager of Clitheroe FC and the current chief executive of the Lancashire FA.

“We completed the Manchester to Blackpool race recently and were happy with the way it went.

“Me and Stephen are ultra competitive so we will be pushing each other all the way.”

While there will be 120 cyclists making the trip, the brothers will be part of a smaller group of 12 to 13 riders who will ride under the name of Team Dribble.

“We’ve got the same colour kit as Team Sky but that is where they comparisons end,” added 49-year-old David, the elder of the two brothers by two years. “Team Dribble is very apt because we are always dribbling by the end of each day!”

Action Medical Research has been responsible for making several important breakthroughs including the UK Polio Vaccine, ultrasound scanning in pregnancy and has helped thousands of children affected by disease and disability.

The brothers lost their own mother in recent months and instead of flowers they had money donated to the charity.

“This makes it more personal for us and gives us an added incentive to raise as much money as possible and complete the challenge,” added David.

Anyone wishing to make a donation can contact David Burgess on 07730 691243 or send a cheque to him at 26 Newlands Avenue, Clitheroe, BB7 2PU.
