ACCRINGTON teenager Nikki Foster is revelling in her ‘greatest ever achievement’ after booking a coveted place in Thursday’s British Open – 23 years after her father Trevor performed the same feat.
The 19-year-old Pleasington ace will rub shoulders with the world’s best women golfers at Carnoustie after shooting a superb two-under par 69 in Local Final Qualifying at Panmure yesterday.
She was one of just two amateurs to claim from the 18 places on offer, four birdies in a consistent round proving enough on the Scottish links.
“It seems a bit crazy, being only 19 and making it to the British Open,” said Foster. “I played a lot of great iron shots and just tried to stay calm. There’s no question that this is my greatest ever achievement. I was out there against a lot of professionals.”
She was helped around Panmure by her caddie and father, Lancashire stalwart Trevor, who qualified for the 1988 Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes.
“I was crying my eyes out at the 18th hole,” said Trevor. “I’m so proud of what she’s achieved.”
