GRAHAM Alexander’s future with Burnley is not clear cut, Lancashire Telegraph Sport understands.

A national newspaper has reported the 39-year-old midfielder is being released by the Clarets after four years’ service, and in the final year of his current contract.

However, the situation is not cut and dried, as negotiations between player and club remain ongoing.

Alexander was offered a coaching role at Turf Moor under the terms of the deal he signed last summer, but the Scotland international has indicated that he would prefer to keep his focus on playing for now.

He reached 1,000 senior appearances in April after coming off the bench at home to Swansea City, but is determined his playing career won’t end there.

However, Alexander never started a game under Burnley manager Eddie Howe, following his appointment as Brian Laws’ successor in January.

And as we reported before the players reported back for training last Thursday, he was not expected to figure in Howe’s plans for the forthcoming season.

Alexander captained the club in the Premier League season during Steven Caldwell’s absence, and was given the armband full-time by Laws last summer, but it is expected to change hands this year whether Alexander moves on or not.
