BURNLEY manager Eddie Howe has revealed Chris McCann could be in line for the captaincy after signing a new two-year deal.

But the Clarets boss has revealed the 23-year-old is not the only candidate.

McCann marked the return to pre-season training by finalising his new contract after a summer of negotiations and, after leading the teams out for the final game of last season, there has been speculation about whether he will retain the armband in the new campaign.

“That's something for further down the line,” said Howe.

“We've got to take stock and have a look at all the candidates in the frame as there are a number of players.”

The captaincy changed hands no less than six times last season, either as a result of injury or absence, but Howe regards it as a plus to have a variety of leaders at his disposal.

“It's important. You want to try to have as many as you can in your squad,” said the Burnley boss, who has embarked on his first full pre-season at Turf Moor.

“It's perhaps a dying art in modern football these days. I don't think there are as many natural leaders as there used to be.

“We have a number who lead by example in their conduct, we need to add voices on the pitch.”

Should McCann get the nod, Howe is confident age won't be a barrier.

“I had a very young captain at Bournemouth,” he said.

“If you can earn the respect of your team-mates and lead and have the best intentions for the team at all times I think you can captain. I don't think age is an issue.”

Of McCann's new deal, Howe added: “Signing Chris really does feel like a new signing for us because of his long-term injury.

“The fact that he has pledged his future to us is a real boost to the whole club and hopefully Chris can continue where he left off last season.

“We're delighted to have him on board, both as a player and as a person as well.”
