Saturday was a day punctuated by cheers.

The first roar from the Clayton End was for Jack Barrett, who was made a freeman of Hyndburn on the pitch before kick-off for his efforts in raising Stanley from the dead back in 1969.

I know Jack very well and I am immensely proud that the town have recognised this humble servant of Accrington.

As the Reds took to the pitch, the stands came alive once again as we showed our appreciation for the quality of football we have witnessed this season and the hard work put in by each and every one of the Stanley players.

The late-comers still queuing outside the ground five minutes after kick-off will have been kicking themselves for having that extra pint as man of the match Jimmy Ryan smashed home the first of his three goals.

Barnet had not read the script and, after a defensive mix-up, they equalised within two minutes.

The visitors have been strong supporters of Accrington in FA and Football League meetings and I hope they can pull off the great escape next weekend and avoid the drop.

With all three points in the red bag and results elsewhere securing Stanley fifth spot, the lap of honour was a very special occasion.

The merriment continued after the game at the Player of the Season awards with Jimmy Ryan being awarded the Fans’ Player of the Season trophy, and Andy Procter picking up Players’ Player and Manager’s Player awards.

For his stunning strike against our old foes Hereford, Sean McConville received the Goal of the Season award to add to his Young Player trophy.

The loudest cheer of the day was reserved for the Fan of the Season.

Earlier this year we lost Coxy and he has left a massive gap in all our lives, and whatever happens in the play-off lottery this season is dedicated to the memory of our great friend.
