GRAHAM Alexander made his 1,000th appearance for club and country as Burnley breathed life into previously fading play-off hopes.

Alexander received a standing ovation as history was made at Turf Moor.

In replacing matchwinner Chris Eagles in the 87th minute the 39-year-old became only the second outfield player ever to achieve that milestone, behind his former Scunthorpe United team-mate Tony Ford.

But his focus was on securing three vital points in the three minutes of normal time that remained, and the eight, in total, that were added on in the end.

Alexander and co stood firm, and the Scotland international almost wrapped it up with a stunning free kick that Dorus De Vries clawed off the goalline.

With Leeds United slipping up at home to Watford, and with Burnley hosting their game in hand with Middlesbrough on Tuesday night, there could be a twist in the race for the play-offs yet.

After a goalless first half, in which Swansea twice hit the post, their on-loan Chelsea striker Fabio Borini broke the deadlock eight minutes after the break.

An own goal by Ashley Williams, from Chris Eagles' cross, quickly levelled matters up for Burnley.

Then when Garry Monk fouled Jay Rodriguez in the box, referee David Webb had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

With penalty king Alexander still on the bench at the time, spot kick duties fell to Eagles, who buried it.

Eagles made way for Alexander, who came on to a standing ovation, and played his part in seeing the game out.
