LONG-serving goalkeeper Brian Jensen has appealed to Burnley fans to get behind them as they make one last-gasp bid for the play-offs.

The Clarets slipped further down the Championship after their winless run extended to six games at Nottingham Forest, where they suffered a 2-0 defeat following Marvin Bartley’s first-half sending off.

The gap to sixth remained at seven points as Leeds United lost 2-1 at Derby County, but Millwall, Leicester, Hull and Watford have taken advantage of Burnley’s blip by jumping ahead of them in the race for the top six.

However, Jensen insists they are refusing to give up while there is still a chance of making a late leap into the play-off pack with six games to go.

And the Dane has called for a united front as they prepare to face Swansea City on Saturday, with the message to fans: “Get behind us!

“Swansea are a good side. They will pass the ball but we need to get after them otherwise they’re just going to pass it around us.

“We need the supporters to back us up.

“We are as frustrated as they are.

“Players say it doesn’t affect you, but if your own fans get on your back it will affect you.

“That's what we need on Saturday and I know they can do it.

"If they get behind us they will see some positives.

“If we make a mistake, that happens in football. If you try to be positive you will make mistakes, but a goal could come out of it too.

“We’ve always got to be positive.

“We need the fans to get behind us on Saturday.

“It’s been a little bit up and down for the last couple of weeks, so we need them, definitely.”

Although Jensen was disappointed with Tuesday’s result, he was pleased with the overall response from Saturday’s trip to Leicester, where his first game since October ended on a sour note with a 4-0 defeat.

“I think there were so many positive things to come out of Tuesday,” said the 35-year-old.

“I thought it was a 0-0 game but unfortunately for us it was not the case.

“Going down to ten men that early in the game is always going to give you a mountain to climb but I thought we did really, really well.

“Marvin is devastated. I wouldn’t say he let the team down. I didn’t see it because I was so far away but if he was just going in for a whole-hearted tackle and if he was a little bit too hard, it happens.”

Of their fading play-off hopes he added: “Mathematically it’s still possible and we are not going to lie down. We have got another game on Saturday, and that’s another six-pointer. If we get a good result there we’ve still got a game in hand and it’s still possible.

“With 11 men on the pitch on Saturday we’ve got a chance against anybody.”
