MELLOR’S Brogan Townend got her 2011 campaign off to a stunning start by eclipsing a top class field to win the Formby Leveret Trophy.

The 16-year-old junior England international from Pleasington took the honours with a five-shot victory on Saturday.

Townend set the pace in the first round at a cold and blustery day at Formby and moved away from the 64-strong field in the afternoon, returning a six-under par scored for the day with a pair of 68s.

She had a bogey-free round in the morning and, in the afternoon, dropped just two shots over the front nine. In total, she carded eight birdies over 36 holes.

The Clitheroe Grammar School student put her victory down to steady play and help from her caddy, her mother Corby, who was also on ‘the bag’ when Townend won the Pleasington Putter last year.

It is the latest success for the county ace, who is also the current Lancashire junior champion.

A total of 11 Lancashire players took part in the Formby Leveret, with Emily Taylor of Royal Lytham and St Annes in fifth place.

Townend’s Pleasington club-mate Nikki Foster was in the top 20.
