Clitheroe and District Motor Club members David Wallbank and Terry Martin survived a roll on Stage 10 of Sunday’s Thirsk-based Riponian Stages Rally to finish 21st overall in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo5.

Despite the car being extensively damaged, they completed the stage and headed off to the next one only to be stopped from starting by the events chief medical officer.

Martin explained: “He said we could only continue if we had eye protection and us not having full face helmets meant getting hold of some goggles.

“Fortunately our service crew found a shop open in Helmsley that sold ski goggles and we were then able to complete the last two stages to finish the rally.”

Malcolm Mawdsley, whose rear-wheel drive Subaru Impreza was recently on show in Blackburn’s Mall, finished 36th overall and second Class D.

Charlie Payne and Craig Thorley won the Ripon Motor Sports Club event, that ran in the forests on the western fringe of the North York Moors National Park, in their Ford Focus WRC06.
