Edenfield's second XI won the Lawrenson Cup on Monday night - their first trophy in two decades.

Ian Bailey's side had to wait 24 hours to lift the trophy after rain cut short their game against Ribblesdale Wanderers on Sunday, in a repeat of the 2005 final which they lost.

After bowling out Ribby for 155, Edenfield made 109-3 before play was stopped.

When they resumed, Bailey's boys knew that just 47 off 17 overs would deliver the trophy.

The captain said: "Bill Slinger and Jim Flitcroft, who's just 18, opened and batted very well.

"Bill was steady and put the ball about, just like we wanted.

"We spoke about it and we said we would bat round Bill Slinger if we had to.

"We knew if we batted all the overs we'd win. We knew we had a job to do."

And Bailey, whose side is second to Brinscall in Ribblesdale Division Two, was delighted when victory was secured on home ground with three overs to spare.

He added: "The older guys at the club have told me this is the first thing the second team has won in 20 years.

"When you consider that 15 years ago the first team won this cup, it shows how far the club has come. It was a good win. It was a shame it went over two nights but the weather interfered. But we had a good night on Monday."

Bailey admitted that there were a few nervy moments on the Sunday after he won the toss and opted to bowl.

He said: "Bill opened the bowling and picked up some early wickets. I think we had them 50-5 at one stage.

"But John Braithwaite and Paul Spencer put 80 on as they recovered well. It was looking like it could go either way then.

"But four wickets from Jason Hawke dragged us back well.

"We got them all out for 155 and were quite happy."

He added: "We had a difficult cup run to get to the final. We're a Division Two side and we played four Division One teams.

"I know it's a cliche but it was a real team effort.

"We bowled well throughout the tournament. Bill, myself and Jason all did our jobs.

"Batting wise, Gareth Hudson and Christian Slinger, Bill's son, did well to get us to the final, although Christian did not play in the final because he's got into the first team now.

"It's my first season as captain and I'm delighted, though I can't say it's all been down to me.

"We've got a good side, some experienced guys with some young lads."
