STEVEN Reid is preparing to take a "big step" in his football career.

And as the Blackburn Rovers midfielder gears up for leading the Republic of Ireland out as captain for the first time - in their friendly against Holland tonight - he has thanked Mark Hughes for the Rovers boss's part in his progress.

"After such a good season last season I've a lot more confidence," the 25-year-old said ahead of tonight's game at Lansdowne Road.

"That probably started with Mark Hughes coming in at club level and giving me a good run in the team and Stan (Steve Staunton) is showing the same in me.

"It's a big step up to captain the national team, but with the faith that has been shown in me, there comes confidence.

"Because of the injuries I know I'm holding the fort for Robbie (Keane) and Shay (Given), but it's a challenge I'm looking forward to. If I do a good job, then somewhere down the line there might be another possibility."

Reid, who will earn his 19th international cap tonight, added: "I went to the World Cup four years ago and that remains the highlight of my career. But I've not played in enough qualifying matches and big games, and that is what I want to do this season.

"If I do well for Blackburn and also show my form for Ireland, then it should be a good year for me."

Staunton is also expecting big things from Reid this year.

"He needed 12 months of playing football. He has had that, and it benefited him and Blackburn Rovers. With that, it is going to benefit us as well," said the Republic of Ireland boss.

"He has taken on board everything we've said and he is maturing as a player and a person.

"He is also probably in the most important position on the park and the added responsibility will bring him on."
