The recently deceased and much lamented Gerry Rafferty famously sang about clowns to the left of him, jokers to the right, and there he was stuck in the middle.

It could perhaps be Steve Kean’s theme song.

While the Blackburn Rovers circus continues to entertain with stories of recruiting Ronaldinho and David Beckham, it is to the great credit of the present crop of performers that they have managed to win two important football matches.

More than that, especially in that tremendous victory over Liverpool, Rovers have played a pleasing style of football that has been more entertaining than what we had become used to under Sam.

I am not going to get carried away on the back of one very encouraging game against a struggling Liverpool, and we should still have major concerns about the shambolic way the PR side of the club is being run under Venky’s.

You would have thought that anyone with a business head, irrespective of whether they had previously been connected with football, would realise that you don’t do open business on the radio or in the newspapers, announcing to the football world who you are wishing to sign and in some cases what you are offering to pay for them.

It’s understandable that the majority believed the pursuit of such Hollywood signings was nothing more than a publicity stunt.

No real harm done then, we may think, and at least it is getting Blackburn Rovers’ name known internationally. Not so.

I suspect we will have to pay the price when Kean bids for our more realistic targets.

You can just imagine Ian Holloway and his chairman adding another million or two to the price of Charlie Adam for instance, thinking this lot were prepared to pay nearly £20million over three years to bring the Brazilian to the circus.

Nevertheless, despite all this background nonsense it does appear that our new manager certainly has the support of the players.

His comment that it was a great team effort against Liverpool was spot on and there certainly has been nothing wrong with the team spirit, which is a great compliment to the present playing staff as well as to Keano himself.

One player that has stood out in the last couple of games and who seems to have come of age at last is Junior Hoilett.

Now he’s got that first senior goal at Ewood, I expect many more from the twinkle-toed Canadian.

Chelsea next up. Yes, they are in crisis by their standards in the league but it would still be a major upset if we were to add to their woes by getting a result at Stamford Bridge.

For this season of turmoil at Ewood being stuck in the middle of the league with our new boss will do nicely for most of us.

However, we’d like the entertainment to be strictly on the pitch.

Clowns and jokers please button it and take a back seat.
