MICHEL Salgado wants to extend his Ewood Park stay for another season as he dreams of helping Rovers to achieve “something big”.

The former Spanish international has fast become a fans’ favourite with the blue half of East Lancashire and is now ready to prolong his stay at Blackburn Rovers.

Salgado, 35, signed a two-year deal at Rovers from Real Madrid in August 2009 and, after a slow start, has established himself as a first team mainstay at right back.

Now, with the new Venky’s regime at the helm and Salgado enjoying his football, he admits he would relish the opportunity of extending his current deal, which expires this summer.

He said: “To be honest I am really happy here. Maybe we need to talk about the conditions.

“But if it’s about the lifestyle, enjoying the Premier League and enjoying Blackburn, then I am really happy here. I like playing for these fans, they have respect for me.

“Maybe there is a big chance I will sign another year here. Now it’s a good time, with money we have a chance to build.

"One of the main reasons I’d like to stay and have one more year where we have a little more chance to do something big.”

When Salgado was first brought to Ewood Park by former boss Sam Allardyce, concerns were raised over his ability to cope with demanding nature of the Premier League.

The fears looked founded as well during the early months of his Rovers career as he struggled to win a starting spot and was given a torrid time when he did play.

He has since become a first team regular and impressed the Ewood faithful with his tough tackling, willingness to attack and intelligence and he would like his Rovers love affair to carry on for a while longer yet.

While disappointed Allardyce has since been sacked by Rovers new owners he insists he is fully behind new boss Steve Kean.

Salgado said: “It won’t have an effect on my future. I have to thank Sam. He was one of the main reasons I came to England and signed here.

“But I am enjoying the Premier League and enjoying Blackburn. Now I belong to the club. I am really happy here.

“It’s about a new manager, new owners, the fans. If they are all happy with me.

“To be honest with Madrid in the first few years I used to play 65 or 70 games a year. It’s not easy to come here at 35 and play all the games.

“In the Premier League it’s very physical and in my position, right-back.

“I am feeling fit and I can recover and still enjoy it. I have motivation every morning to keep going, keep playing football after 18 years.”
