Bacup Borough got off to a winning start in the North West Counties Division 1 with all of Brent Peters' summer signings making a huge contribution.

On nine minutes, Simon Heaton found Carl Rezia who played an intelligent through ball over the top of the Flixton defence, Tony Coyne raced through and headed the ball over the advancing keeper.

Bacup were playing good controlled football and looked solid as a unit, but a quick free kick almost caught the visitors cold and they had keeper Billy Carrington to thank for two smart saves.

At the opposite end, Rezia and Ian Barker linked up well before releasing Coyne who brought an excellent save from the Flixton keeper.

On the half hour mark, Bacup increased their lead when Heaton's quality ball into the box was volleyed past the keeper by Barker.

Following the break, it was inevitable that Flixton would have to change things in order to get back into the game, and they did on 65 minutes.

Anderson seemed to be beaten to the ball easily and Stuart Shepherd failed to react quick enough allowing Vaughan to go past defenders with ease before picking his spot.

The visitors had two further chances both from corners but Barker and Lee Kershaw headed just over.

* Bacup entertain Salford City on Thursday at The Brian Boys West View Stadium. Kick off 7.45pm.
