CHRIS McCann is preparing to put an 18-month injury nightmare behind him and hand Burnley boss Brian Laws a New Year fitness boost.

The midfielder has barely kicked a competitive ball since suffering the first of three serious knee problems in a 3-1 Premier League win over Sunderland in September 2009, and had been ruled out until February at the earliest following his latest setback.

But Laws declared McCann is “ahead of schedule” and suggested he would be like a new signing when the transfer window opens in 2011.

McCann has been beset by problems since suffering cruciate and medial ligament damage last year.

Although the damage repaired itself, avoiding the need for surgery, it had become a weak spot.

His first comeback was shortlived as, after getting through the FA Cup third round defeat at Reading, McCann suffered a secondary knee problem early on in the following game, at Bolton Wanderers, in January.

The 23-year-old later underwent surgery, and played three quarters of a reserve game against Manchester United in April.

But, after working hard over the summer break to reach full fitness, McCann didn’t get beyond the third pre-season friendly after suffering a third breakdown during the club’s pre-season tour of Singapore in July.

The Dubliner was subsequently booked in for full reconstructive knee surgery the following month and was ruled out until February, at the earliest, at the time.

But Laws has hinted at the possibility of McCann making his comeback as early as January. And the Burnley boss is confident of welcoming a strong and confident player back into his squad.

“We might have a player there in January, you never know,” said Laws.

“He’s chomping at the bit. His knee feels so solid and secure, and his frame of mind is fantastic.

“Chris is progressing so well, he’s done fantastically well over the last month, there’s been a progression in him and a confidence.”

About the possibility of McCann returning in the New Year, Laws added: “He’s on course, definitely, he’s actually ahead of schedule, and we’re really pleased with that.”
