BURNLEY-born Jay Rodriguez was the toast of the town after grabbing a late winner against rivals Preston North End.

The Clarets looked to be heading for the first home defeat of the season when they trailed 3-1 with less than 10 minutes to go But three goals in six minutes turned this Lancashire hot-pot on its head, and they had hat-trick hero Chris Iwelumo to thank just as much as their homegrown star.

Iwelumo headed Burnley into a ninth minute lead from former Preston winger Ross Wallace's corner, but that was cancelled out by Adam Barton midway inside the first half.

Keith Treacy, who had failed to clear Iwelumo's effort off the line, atoned for his error when he put Preston in front just after the half-hour.

Jon Parkin looked to have wrapped it up for North End from Treacy's left-wing cross, after Rodriguez had been brought on for David Edgar and Wade Elliott switched to right back.

But when Billy Jones was sent off for a second bookable offence, the Clarets, inspired by second-half substitutes Chris Eagles and Jack Cork, got to work and Iwelumo offered hope with a stunning right-foot volley in the 84th minute.

Roared on by the crowd, captain Graham Alexander pinged a cross from the left touchline into the box and onto Iwelumo's head to make it 3-3 in the 88th minute.

Burnley would have settled for a point at that stage, but Rodriguez had other ideas and headed in Elliott's delivery from close range.
