LUCKY Steve Ion has achieved the extraordinary feat of recording two hole-in-ones at separate PAR FOUR holes – and both in the space of 12 months.

The Accrington seven-handicapper was competing at the Captain’s Qualifier event at Withnell’s Oak Royal Golf and Country Club on Saturday when he bagged his second ace at the 325-yard second hole.

He chalked up his first at Oak Royal’s sixth hole last July.

Few golfers can claim to secure two hole-in-ones in their career, and only then do most occur at short par three holes.

But to score a pair on par fours is highly unusual, and Ion admits he is gobsmacked by his remarkable efforts.

“It’s ridiculous,” said the 33-year-old. “It’s a chance in a million. I’ve been on the internet searching for others that have done the same thing, but I can’t find anyone. It’s totally unheard of.

“They’re perhaps not the longest par fours in the world, but it takes a massive effort to get the ball on the green at both holes.”

Ion added: “Usually I take it 250 or 260 yards on the second hole, then pitch onto the green. But I gave it a good spank and knew I’d hit it clean.

“As I walked up the fairway, I couldn’t see the ball and thought ‘I can’t possibly have done it again!’ But it was there in the cup.”

Ion is now eyeing up an even more incredible achievement.

He said: “I’m trying not to be ego-centric but I’d love to get another hole-in-one on another par four and there’s a couple at Oak Royal, the fourth and fifth, that are possibilities.”
