BURNLEY boss Steve Cotterill is expecting even more from his young guns next season.

Chris McCann and Kyle Lafferty have both made the breakthrough into the Clarets' first team this season and have impressed with their level of performance.

McCann has made huge strides this season, making 14 starts, with Lafferty, who scored three goals in a loan spell at Darlington, making three starts for the Clarets first team.

But Cotterill is expecting more from them next season after a summer of bulking up to prepare them to play an even bigger part for Burnley next season.

"Chris McCann and Kyle Lafferty have been tremendous. It's fantastic but it's still only a start for them.

"Chris is ahead of Kyle in terms of development but I think, with all due respect, Kyle probably plays in a harder position and needs to be judged more as a striker than Chris does as a midfielder.

"In parts of the game against Hull on Saturday, I thought a summer weights programme will enhance them again next year. I just felt a couple of times just a bit more body strength was needed because of the modern game and the way it's played.

"I bet in the last year they've both grown four or five inches and that growth spurt takes it out of kids. With that growth and trying to play games and do all the things that is required from a modern footballer is very difficult during a season.

"If they can feed themselves properly at the end of the season and get on a weights programme we'll be looking for a further improvement come July."

Lafferty has yet to hit the target for the Clarets since his return from a loan spell and missed good chances against Hull and Crystal palace over the Easter programme.
