SIMON Garner is back in football after accepting an invitation to join the coaching staff at Wycombe Wanderers.

The Blackburn Rovers legend and Lancashire Evening Telegraph columnist has agreed to become Wanderers' new striker coach following an approach by their manager John Gorman.

Garner is still viewed as a cult-hero by fans of the League Two club after he spent several seasons there towards the end of his playing career.

Now Gorman is hoping the veteran goal-poacher can pass on some of the knowledge he gained during almost 20 years as a professional footballer to Wanderers' current crop of strikers as the club chases promotion to League One.

The 46-year-old, who is helping the League Two leaders on a part-time basis, said: "It's great to be back in football again.

"Their manager, John Gorman, phoned me up and asked me if I'd help them out and it's been going well so far.

"I've only done four or five sessions, but Wycombe have scored four goals in their last two games so I must be doing something right!"

At the moment, Garner is doing two sessions a week for the Adams Park outfit but he would jump at the chance of becoming more heavily involved if such an opportunity arose.

"I don't know how long it's going to last," said Garner, who scored 192 goals in 565 appearances for Rovers .

"They were going through a dodgy patch when they weren't scoring goals, which is when John asked me if I'd help out.

"If he were to offer me a full-time post then I'd definitely be interested because I've enjoyed the buzz of being involved in football again.

"Wycombe have got some good young players who are eager to learn and if I can pass on anything that might help them to become better players then that's great."

Garner added: "To be honest, from what I've seen, things haven't changed too much from when I used to play - only the players look a lot younger these days!"
