ACCRINGTON Stanley manager John Coleman was hoping to add at least one new face to his squad before Saturday's home game against Cambridge United.

The Reds boss is looking to strengthen during the January transfer window as his side hopes to build on their 14-game unbeaten run.

And after securing former Wigan Athletic youngster Phil Edwards on a two-year contract, another player from a Premiership side could be added to the squad in the next fortnight.

"I'm hoping to finalise a League One defender this week," said Coleman.

"And I'm hoping to tie up a League One midfielder I'm just waiting to hear from his manager and possibly a Premiership squad player on loans to the end of the season."

"The problem is you're trying to bring quality players in, but we've won nine and drawn three of the last 12 games so quality players don't want to come in and sit on the bench unfortunately.

"It's getting them to come and realise what we're trying to achieve here and we are trying to achieve something special here."

Coleman was disappointed to miss out on the signature of Stevenage striker Anthony Elding, who has decided to make the step down to mid-table Conference North side Kettering Town.

Stevenage accepted a package that could reach £40,000 and a sell-on clause.

"We felt we wouldn't pay that type of money with such a short spell left on his contract," Coleman said.

"They weren't interested in letting him go out on loan to us because they felt we were one of their chief threats to the league.

"I think there were a few clubs after him."
