POLICE are gearing up for next weekend's derby clash between Burnley and Preston by visiting known troublemakers and warning them to behave on match day.

Officers are calling at the homes of suspected soccer yobs in a bid to deter any outbreak of violence on the day of the game.

Inspector Dave Croll, of Burnley police, said: "This is a fixture that we always look forward to and historically, although there is plenty of local banter, there is very little trouble at this fixture.

"We are certainly not expecting any problems, but as always, we will be ready to respond quickly should anyone start behaving in a disorderly or anti-social manner.

"We are visiting some of the people who have been involved in trouble in the past to advise them to be on their best behaviour and the message is that people should enjoy the day."

Police colleagues in Preston are also writing letters to suspected football hooligans, warning them not to step out of line if they are planning to go to the January 21 game.

Police are also advising fans to plan their journey and allow extra time.

They say that although a traffic plan is in place, road works on the canal bridge on Parliament Street coupled with large crowds, could mean some delays for fans.

Insp Croll said: "As with every match, a traffic plan is in place.

"However, the closure of this key route could well cause some disruption.

"We would urge fans to allow extra time for their journey and if they experience delays, to please be patient."
