CLARETS midfielder Garreth O'Connor has vowed to break his own goal-scoring record to help shoot Burnley into the play-offs.

O'Connor, who signed from Bournemouth in the summer, scored 14 goals last season for the Cherries and is aiming to better that mark.

The Irishman has eight goals to his name this term and wants to surpass the mark he set last season.

He said: "I've been fairly pleased with my goal return this season. Obviously, a couple of them have been penalties but they still have to be stuck away.

"I scored 14 goals last season and I'm looking to try and beat that this season and that would be a great return.

"Every goal counts more in this league because it's harder to score in the Championship and I've managed to get eight so far so hopefully I can go on and notch a few more.

"I set a target but I keep that to myself. I had a good run a couple of months back but then I hit a dry patch but I've got two in my last three games and hopefully I can continue that.

"The gaffer set the midfield in general a goal target and if we can reach that target then it'll get us into the play-offs."

But O'Connor says he's not been totally happy with his performances thus far and reckons he can get better.

The 27-year-old has grabbed his eight goals in 20 starts, and is the club's second highest scorer behind Ade Akinbiyi with 12 but still he feels there's room for improvement.

He added: "It was a bit of a step up when I first came here but every player experiences that when you step up a level but I feel I can definitely improve as a player.

"I haven't been 100 per cent happy with the way I've been playing this year and I can definitely get better.

"My form hasn't been great. I've scored a few goals but I just need a bit more consistency to go along with the goals."
