BRIAN Laws was pleased with the opportunities Burnley created against Premier League leaders Chelsea, and in particular Steven Fletcher’s goal - the first in his four games in charge.

“If you’re going to score and you’re scoring against the league leaders then it does give you hope. I’ve been waiting for a goal, so that was pleasing,” said the 48-year-old, who had hopes of a first point dashed by controversial Chelsea captain John Terry’s late winner.

“It’s disappointing that we were only five or six minutes away from achieving a point against Chelsea. That would have been a great bonus for us, but I’m taking a lot of positives out of the game.

“It was a great goal by Fletcher - great quality, and I thought we defended really, really well. Only that one point at which we didn’t defend well was the goal.

“If you give John Terry that kind of space and time, that’s what you get.

“But we were delighted with the second half commitment and desire.

“Our goalkeeper really didn’t have a lot to do, we kept everything in front of him, so there were a lot of pluses and if we continue in that vain, especially against the teams in and around us, with that of commitment and with the drive of the supporters here, we really do feel confident that we can go and win games.”

And Laws admitted he was confident of climbing out of the bottom three.

“Absolutey. We know the score, we know what we need to do,” he insisted.

“Getting a point off Chelsea wasn’t going to be the deciding factor about whether we stay in the division. Taking points off the teams around us is going to be the deciding factor, so we know exactly what we have to do and exactly where we’ve got to take these points from.

“The home form in particular, with eight games at home to go against teams in and around us we’re feeling very confident that we can achieve that.”
