BURNLEY manager Brian Laws has not given up hope of bringing David Nugent back to Turf Moor until the end of the season, despite the striker returning to Portsmouth.

The 24-year-old went back to his parent club on Friday after his initial loan expired ahead of the Clarets’ 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea.

But Laws was working hard to secure a new deal for the striker before today’s 5pm transfer window cut-off point.

“Hopefully we can conclude a deal for Nugent,” said the Clarets boss.

However, he admitted he wasn’t pinning all of his hopes on the Merseysider, who scored three goals in 17 appearances after arriving from Fratton Park on the last transfer deadline day.

“If we can’t it will be another striker - and maybe somebody else.”

Chelsea starlet Jack Cork is expected to arrive on loan today, while I understand Derby County striker Rob Hulse could be an option if Nugent’s return falls through.

Laws revealed how he was working round the clock to help their cause by strengthening his squad for the second half of the Premier League season.

“While everyone is sleeping at night I am on the phone,” he said.

“One agent rang me at 1.30 in the morning. I wasn’t too pleased, but if it bears fruit I’ll live with that.

“It’s been a short period to get organised and strengthen the team, but I am hoping for positive news (today).”
