BURNLEY RES 2 Thompson 23, 82 HULL CITY RES 1 Hughes 76 THERE were mixed fortunes for Burnley as the reserves recorded back-to-back league wins tonight.

Captain Steven Caldwell stepped up his comeback from a pre-season groin strain by completing an hour ahead of Saturday's visit of Birmingham City.

But the Clarets' injury problems deepened as Fernando Guerrero went off with a hamstring injury in first-half stoppage time, and Burnley were left to complete the game with 10 men after Jay Rodriguez was forced off with an ankle problem once all three substitutes had been used.

The striker landed awkwardly in going for a header and was carried off on a stretcher after the hour mark - a worrying sight for manager Owen Coyle, who last week had Chris McCann and Martin Paterson ruled out for around three months with serious knee injuries.

Guerrero was able to make his own way off the field, but it was a cruel blow for the birthday boy after he had laid on the cross for Steven Thompson to score what proved to be the winner on 23 minutes.

Guerrero, who turned 20 today, occupied the right wing in a strong line-up, with Christian Kalvenes on the opposite side and David Edgar partnering Kevin McDonald in central midfield to allow Caldwell to take his place at centre half alongside Michael Duff.

Edgar provided the slightest assist for Thompson to break the deadlock, but the competitive and physical nature of Hull's second string meant yellow cards became more frequent than goal attempts as the game wore on.

Concerns were more for the injured Rodriguez when Hull equalised through Bryan Hughes with 14 minutes to go, although there was more than a suspicion of offside when he headed in Craig Fagan's left-wing cross-shot on the line.

But Thompson lightened the mood with a brilliant solo effort to win it for the Clarets, starting the move 30 yards out and finishing it with a sweet left-foot shot eight minutes from time.
