AARON Davies secured Blackburn Hawks’ first victory of the season with a superb hat-trick in Sunday’s rematch against Trafford Metros.

After suffering a fourth straight league defeat away to the Manchester side on Saturday, Hawks reversed the 4-3 scoreline at the Arena 24 hours later.

Head coach Mark Stokes said: “Both sides were similar in ability and so I felt that we were unlucky not to come away with a point from the first fixture.

“Our all-round performance on Saturday was good, but Aaron Davies was the difference between the two teams on Sunday.

“After three defeats on the spin, it was always going to be a big weekend for us and I was pleased with the way that we played.

“I’m glad that we got something out of the weekend, but also a little disappointed that we didn’t get more.

“Trafford are a tough team and so it was nice to avenge Saturday’s 4-3 defeat with our first victory of the campaign in front of our home fans.”

In Saturday’s opening encounter, Hawks recovered from going 2-0 down to level the scores thanks to strikes from Rick Hughes and Anthony Kinder.

Trafford again took the lead, before Lance Derbyshire replied. But with less than four minutes remaining, the hosts broke clear to claim maximum points.

In the return clash, twice Hawks led through goals from Davies, but they found themselves 3-2 down going into the final period.

Summer signing Hughes grabbed his second of the weekend to bring the sides level, before man-of-the-match Davies completed his hat-trick to secure the win.

“I expect we’ll be jostling for positions with Trafford come the end of the season, so it was a good test for us,” Stokes added.

“Hopefully we’ll be able to pick up some momentum now and take it into two tough away games next weekend.”
