BLACKBURN Rovers footballer Pascal Chimbonda was today banned from driving for six months after he was found guilty of speeding.

The full-back was clocked speeding on the A1 near Newark, Nottinghamshire, in October 2008 and again on the A19 near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, in January this year.

Northallerton Magistrates Court was told under the “totting up” rules he had more than 12 points on his licence and was over the threshold for a driving ban.

Chimbonda, 30, of Loughton, Essex, who did not appear in court today and was not legally represented, will also have to pay £2,185 in fines and court costs for the two offences.

The French international full-back was caught speeding at 82mph in a 70mph zone in a black Cadillac saloon car on the A1 near Newark on October 7 last year.

He initially pleaded not guilty to the offence at Grantham Magistrates Court but the offence was dealt with by Northallerton Magistrates Court today.

The court was also told he was also caught speeding at 91mph in a 70mph zone in his Porsche Cayenne in January this year on the A19 near Thirsk.

Chimbonda was due to be sentenced for that matter earlier this month but the case was adjourned until today at his request.

Magistrates have been told the player`s previous driving offences include failing to provide information as to the keeper of the vehicle and for having no insurance.

The case had been adjourned twice before because Chimbonda questioned the conviction for having no insurance. However, magistrates were told progress had not been made in the case and they decided to deal with both the new speeding matters in his absence today.

Magistrate Sheila Jefferson said: “He was warned he was likely to be disqualified.”

Chimbonda signed for Rovers from Tottenham Hotspur on a two-year deal in August.
