PREMIER League title winner Jason Wilcox has signed for the Lancashire Telegraph.

The former left-winger, part of Blackburn’s Championship-winning team in 1995, joins Kevin Gallacher and Simon Garner as one of our sports columnists.

Every Tuesday, Jason will be giving you his verdict on Rovers, on what he liked and what he didn’t from the weekend action.

The pacy winger graduated from Rovers’ youth ranks to the senior England side - picking up his Premier League winners medal at Ewood Park on his way.

The Farnworth-born winger made more than 300 appearances in his 10 years at Rovers between 1989 to 2000, providing the ammunition for Chris Sutton and Alan Shearer to fire the club to Premier League glory in 1995.

Wilcox had to work to win the Rovers fans round though after a sticky start saw him receive his fair share of stick from the home fans soon after his senior debut in 1990.

His industry and precision crosses though finally won the Ewood Park faithful round, as he and right winger Stuart Ripley played a major role in the club’s golden era to earn their places in the club’s hall of fame.

Wilcox actually missed the climax of Rovers title-winning season through injury, an absence that coincided with some patchy form that almost lost them the championship, but his Premier League winners medal takes pride of place in his trophy cabinet.

The emergence of the dynamic Damien Duff finally saw Wilcox lose his spot on the left wing, often being utilised at left back, but was still at the club as they were relegated into the First Division.

After a few months of being played on the opposite flank in the second tier of English football, Wilcox returned to top flight football when he signed for Leeds for £3.7million - and he helped them to third place in the league.

Wilcox subsequently enjoyed spells at Leicester City and Blackpool before retiring from the game in 2006. He won first England cap in a 3-0 win over Hungary in 1996 and went on to play against France and Argentina.

Wilcox said: “I’m really looking forward to writing for the Lancashire Telegraph.

"I’m joining a great sports team.”
