The FA Cup extra preliminary round lies ahead this weekend, but one team not competing in the famous competition is Nelson.
“We don’t want to enter it,” said Nelson chairman Alan Pickering.
“We’re not going to win it, are we? We’re not entering it for entering’s sake.”
When you look at it from a non-league club’s perspective, especially in this time of monetary hardship, you can see Pickering’s point.
“It would be four games until there’s any worthwhile revenue, and if it’s a home tie you have to pay all the costs of hosting the other club,” he added. “The most important thing is to consolidate ourselves in the league, get some points on the board. I’m not being miserable, just realistic.”
Clubs pick up £750 prize money for qualifying from the extra preliminary round.
Bacup Borough host Atherton LR at West View tonight (8pm kick-off), while Padiham travel to Holker Old Boys tomorrow.
Ramsbottom will be hoping they can taste cup success against First Division Cheadle Town, while Colne make the away trip to Silsden.
In the Vodkat League Division One, Barnolsdwick Town host Daisy Hill.
