BURNLEY’S pre-season campaign could benefit from the ‘Becks’ factor, as the Clarets are making plans for a friendly with LA Galaxy.

Owen Coyle’s Premier League newcomers jet out to Los Angeles on Thursday for a training camp and two scheduled games against Premier Development League side Ventura County Fusion next Tuesday and United Soccer Leagues First Division outfit Portland Timbers the following Saturday.

But a behind closed doors meeting has been pencilled in against David Beckham and co next Wednesday, before Burnley leave LA for Oregon, where they to complete their 10-day tour.

The game has yet to be confirmed, and a match with Major League Soccer team Chivas USA has been suggested as back-up.

But Clarets officials believe a game with LA Galaxy, where Beckham has just returned from holiday following the end of his loan spell with AC Milan, would be a coup for the club.

“For us to play at the Home Depot Center, even though it will be behind closed doors, will be a good part of the tour,” said Burnley chief executive Paul Fletcher, who is accompanying the squad on tour to establish further ties in the America leagues on the back of their affiliation with Cary Clarets, formerly known as Cary RailHawks.

“There’s a chance of such a game, but it isn’t confirmed yet.

“It’s been in the pipeline for a while, but if it doesn’t come off there’s a chance we could play another Chivas, another Major League Soccer side.”

Explaining the reason for playing the game behind closed doors, Fletcher added: “The difficulty they have with visiting sides is the cost of opening the stadium for a quickly arranged match.

“They have the same policing and stewarding costs as we have, and in a similar game last season they had a crowd of 8,000-9,000. That doesn’t break even for the stadium.

“Both clubs will be treating it as a warm-up game, and that’s why it’s to be behind closed doors.”

Although LA Galaxy are in the middle of their MLS season, no fixtures are scheduled for the week of Burnley’s visit. With a nine-day gap between league games, they have already set up a friendly with AC Milan this Sunday (kick-off 7pm local time).

The Clarets travel to League Two side Morecambe for their second pre-season friendly tonight (kick-off 7.45pm).

Chris Eagles and Chris McCann are hoping to feature after minor knocks kept them out of the first game at Bradford City on Saturday.
