DEPARTING striker Ade Akinbiyi admitted seeing Burnley in the Premier League would be a fitting end to his career in England.

The Clarets have six games in which to secure their place in the Championship’s top six, an achievement the 34-year-old believes they fully deserve.

And although he will play no further part in their promotion push, after a transfer to Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo was completed yesterday, Akinbiyi declared he will be with them in spirit.

“I’m really keeping my fingers crossed that Burnley get to the Premier League; that’d be the icing on the cake,” said the powerful front man, who has racked up 11 clubs since his career began at Norwich 16 years ago, amassing transfer fees totalling almost £16million.

There are mixed emotions as he leaves Turf Moor for a second time; sadness at saying farewell to team-mates who have become firm friends, but excitement at starting a new life in America.

“My children have always wanted to go to America so it’s going to be a very good experience for me and my lifestyle,” said Akinbiyi, who hopes to play against David Beckham when the England midfielder’s loan with AC Milan ends this summer, and is also looking forward to meeting his basketball idol, Hakeem Olajuwon.

“I’m going to go over there and try to give 110 per cent. I’m not going there just to relax and lay back, I’m going to give it my best. But obviously it’s great to have a good lifestyle out there as well.

“I knew other clubs in England wanted me on loan but I wanted to finish here at Burnley. A lot of people didn’t believe me but I’m glad I did now. I’m very sad that I’m leaving, but it’s a new chapter.”

Akinbiyi hopes the top division is not too far away for Burnley, where he has spent more than three years, across two spells, and celebrated some of his best memories.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute that I’ve been at this club,” he added.

“I wouldn’t say I’m that disappointed not to have played more this season because I’ve been working with a great bunch of lads and a good manager and that made up for it more than anything.

“I’ve really enjoyed it.”
