The Nelson Wheelers Cycling Club promote their 60th edition of the Circuit of the Dales time trial on Sunday and event secretary Steve Wilkinson has received the entries of the usual quality field with 114 riders on the programme.

The event has been held continuously since 1949 with only 2001 missing following the nationwide outbreak of foot and mouth disease at that time.

This event is one of the great classics of Northern time trialling and is always won by a top rider of the era.

Great names such as Stan Brittain, Bill Bradley, Vin Denson, Alan Ramsbottom, Dave Lloyd and Chris Boardman, who all went on to successful professional careers, are previous winners.

But pride of place must go to Preston-based Gethin Butler, who holds the course record in an incredible 1 hour 57minute 51 second performance for the 50- mile plus course in 1998.

The first rider leaves the start time keeper shortly after 8.30am with the last man going out at 10-30am precisely.

The start has had to be shortened by about two miles this year due to roadworks on the A65 at Ingleton but then the usual route via Burton-in-Lonsdale, Kirkby Lonsdale, Sedburgh, Hawes and back to Ingleton where the HQ is at the Community Centre in the village.

Ribblehead is perfect for spectators.

Burnley’s Jimmy Wright was the winner of the 14-mile West Pennine Sporting Courses event in the Ribble Valley last weekend.

He completed the course in 34-31, just 15 seconds faster than Adrian Lawrence of Bolton.

Duncan Park of the North Lancashire Road Club took third in 35-52 and Peter Greenwood of Clayton Velo 5th in 35-57.

Wright is not entered for the Circuit of the Dales.
