WADE Elliott is hoping to get more than a passing glimpse of Wembley this season.

The pain of missing out on the Carling Cup final by less than three minutes was still raw when the squad travelled by the landmark arch en route to Watford, less than a week after suffering extra-time heartache against Spurs.

But after Elliott’s opener paved the way for a fifth Premier League scalp in Tuesday’s FA Cup win over West Brom, the road to the national stadium opened up again.

Either Arsenal or Cardiff stand in the way of the Clarets progressing further than the fifth round of this competition.

And, although the outcome won’t be decided until next weekend, after Tuesday night’s replay at the Emirates was postponed, Elliott is relishing the chance to do the double over Arsenal.

“I don’t want to prejudge the result of the replay, but we’re already going to Cardiff once this year, so understandably it would be nice to go to Arsenal,” said the 30-year-old, who came off the bench in December’s League Cup quarter-final win over the Gunners.

“We’ve had a bit of a taste of it this year, and that would probably be another level again.

“We would have nothing to lose, and I think that would be the attitude we would take there.

“We went to Chelsea, and they had only just lose at home to Liverpool for the first time in I don’t know how long, and we played 4-4-2 and all four midfielders were attacking players.

“Even Premier League sides don’t go and do that, so we’d have the same attitude.

“It would be a great occasion, and we could test ourselves and hopefully enjoy it again.”

Although Burnley suffered five straight league defeats while continuing their good form in both the Carling Cup and FA Cup, Elliott insists that neither became a distraction to their Championship campaign.

“We never fixated too much on the Carling Cup, even as the rounds went on, and the results in the league in the last month or so were not through a lack of focus,” said the winger.

“But we’ve really enjoyed the cups. We want to win every game, which comes from the gaffer, and we’ve done it the hard way with a replay in both (FA Cup) rounds, and a good run in the Carling Cup.

“That probably showed in the first game against West Brom where we had just had the Tottenham game and were 2-1 down. It would have been easy to remind ourselves of that and concentrate on the league, but the lads enjoy playing, and hopefully it’s given us the opportunity of a good game in the next round.

“We’ve obviously been burned in one of the cups already this season, but we’ve got belief we can cope with the games and what it throws at us.”

The Clarets again face Midlands opposition when they return to Championship action this weekend, with a trip to third placed Birmingham City.

And Elliott is aiming to use their cup experiences as a spur to reclaim a play-off place.

Owen Coyle’s men dropped out of the promotion-chasing pack for the first time in over two months in January, but Saturday’s 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic pushed them to within two points of sixth to keep another avenue to Wembley open.

“Wherever we go in the next round we’ve got a hell of a job, but we’ve got a couple of massive league games until then,” said the former Bournemouth wide man.

“Last week we went to Watford and got the train that goes right past Wembley, which was a bit of a kick in the teeth. It was horrible.

“Everybody was gutted at the time, but we’ve tried to put it to the back of our minds now and concentrate on the rest of the league games.”
