MATT Derbyshire says he is ‘very excited’ about his loan move to Olympiacos after being unveiled to the Greek media in Athens.

The 22-year-old Blackburn Rovers striker failed to convince Sam Allardyce he could feature in his plans for the rest of the season, so yesterday sealed a deal to link up with the Greek giants for the rest of the season.

And Derbyshire, who is hoping to make his Olympiacos debut in Sunday’s derby at AEK Athens, has suggested that he is keen to make the deal permanent if things go well.

The former Great Harwood forward was met on his arrival at Athens airport by a waiting press pack and told them: “I just need to play football regularly. I want to contribute and that is the reason why I asked to leave Blackburn.

“I had some playing time but usually played as a substitute. I wanted to start some matches.

“I am very excited about Olympiacos.

“I know I am coming to the best club in Greece, a club that is always going for the title and playing in Europe.

“This club matches my philosophy because I like to win and challenge for honours.

“I’m looking forward to meeting my new manager and team-mates and playing at the Karaiskakis Stadium.

“I know that Greek football is evolving and I had no second thoughts saying yes to Olympiacos.”
