BURNLEY winger Wade Elliott admits the strike that landed him the Goal of the Season gong at the North West Football Awards 2008 was one of the best he’s ever scored.

Elliott’s sensational left-foot strike against Char-lton Athletic at Turf Moor in March beat the likes of Liverpool’s Fernando Tor-res and Manchester United’s Cristiano Ron-aldo, as he took the award during a star-studded gala dinner at Manchester’s Midland Hotel on Monday night.

The 29-year-old said he was shocked to pick up the award ahead of a clutch of Premier League stars, but was delighted nonetheless.

“It was a bit of a surprise,” said Elliott.

“It was a great night and I was very flattered to be in that sort of company.

“Before the award, they showed the goals on the screen from Ronaldo, Torres, Elano, Santa Cruz – and then mine.

“I just enjoyed being mentioned, I didn’t expect to win, but it’s special to beat Ronaldo to an award.

He added: “The goal was a bit of a swinger really. Robbie Blake set me up with a great nutmeg and I just hit it.

“I have not scored many goals in my career – not many like that anyway – so I would have to say it’s right up there as one of my best.”

Elliott almost made it a memorable double, being narrowly pipped to the North West Championship Player of the Year by Preston’s Sean St Ledger.

The award, won last year by Clarets defender Michael Duff, was voted for by supporters.
