HOTSHOT Martin Paterson is proving to be worth his weight in gold, after firing Burnley into the Carling Cup second round with his third goal in two games.

Gigg Lane has proved to be a frustrating ground in this competition, as previous managers Stan Ternent and Steve Cotterill will testify after a draw and narrow 3-2 win respectively.

Owen Coyle's League Cup debut threatened to prove equally testing, until £1.3million record signing Paterson broke their resistance at the end of either half.

It was an historic night for for the Clarets as they named seven substitutes for the first time ever, under new Carling Cup regulations.

But the army of travelling fans would have been forgiven for fearing that recent history was set to repeat itself as Bury made a blistering start.

There were worrying echos of Saturday's opening day 4-1 at Sheffield Wednesday as the Shakers started much the brighter of the two sides and carved out the best openings, the pick of them when Andy Bishop and strike partner Glynn Hurst combined and unmarked winger Stephen Hurst burst into the box but had his shot well parried by Brian Jensen on 11 minutes.

Moments early, David Buchanan worked a dangerous overlap with Elliott Bennett down the left; Graham Alexander had been caught out of position but Stephen Jordan came to the rescue to intercept left back Buchanan's ball into the box.

Bennett then brought a superb save from Jensen, who was one of three changes from Saturday's starting line-up, with Christian Kalvenes making his debut at left back, pushing Jordan inside to partner Steven Caldwell at centre half, and Joey Gudjonsson coming in for Remco van der Schaaf.

Danish stopper Jensen was alert to tip over Bennett's vicious dipping shot after the left winger cut inside.

But, unlike Saturday, Burnley dug in to weather the early storm, and began to get a foothold in the game.

Paterson shaved the front of the crossbar as Burnley conjured their best chance 18 minutes in.

Wade Elliott then instigated an exciting move down the right as his header was chested down by Eagles and flicked over the top of the defence for Paterson to sprint on to. The striker quickly cut the ball back for Eagles, who stabbed a shot just wide of the near right post.

Burnley's appeals for a penalty just before the half-hour were ignored, despite Efe Sodje appearing to handle the ball as he went to ground in a challenge with Eagles. Play continued, the ball spun free for Blake on the edge of the box, but the striker went for placement rather than power and the chance was blocked out.

The Clarets continued to probe, and you sensed a goal was coming as Blake fizzed a shot narrowly wide from around 25 yards.

But Bury continued to set alarm bells ringing. After Jordan did well to fend off pressure from Bishop - the Shakers' leading scorer for two years running - Alexander conceded possession cheaply, Michael Jones looked to benefit from it after receiving the ball 20 yards out but saw his shot spin up and over off Jordan's back.

The breakthrough Burnley had been building up to finally came five minutes before the break, and record signing Paterson stepped up to the mark for the second game in a row.

Elliott switched play from right to left, picking out Eagles with a long, diagonal ball. The former Manchester United midfielder, watched by ex-team-mates Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville from the stand, turned to find Kalvenes, but the Norwegian left back's deep cross looked as if it would drop just too long for Paterson at the far post. In the end, though, it was placed to perfection as Paterson stuck out his right leg and volleyed past Wayne Brown from close range.

Blake had the ball in the net for a second time three minutes later, after stopping McCann's long range drive dead, but the flag had gone up long before the striker had turned to sidefoot the ball in the bottom left-hand corner.

Burnley survived a late scare as Ben Futcher, nephew of former Clarets striker Ron, threatened to send the sides into the half-time break level, but the towering 6ft 7ins defender's header from Stephen Dawson's long ball into the box was inches wide of the angle.

While Owen Coyle's men enjoyed the bulk of possession after the break, it was Jensen who was given the most stern test.

After Dawson's early left-foot shot from distance flew just wide of the right hand post, Jensen got down well on an increasingly skiddy surface to gather the ball from Bennett's drive. But the save of the night came just after the hour when, after blocking out Bishop's low shot with his legs, he recovered quickly to somehow parry Bennett's fierce follow-up from close range.

Paterson was a whisker away from adding his and Burnley's second with 18 minutes to go but a deflection from Elliott's cross-shot took it inches away from his outstretched left leg and far left post.

Eagles missed by a matter of inches as his 30-yard right-footer zipped over the bar.

Then, after Kevin McDonald came off the bench to make his Burnley bow, fellow substitute Alan Mahon laid on a dangerous free kick for Caldwell to attack, but the Clarets captain just missed launching himself at a close-range header with three minutes to go.

Eagles was to be thwarted again, after seizing on a poor goal kick and making a driving run at goal, only to see his shot palmed away by Brown. But the ball rolled free for that man Paterson to slide into an empty net and wrap up the tie.
