BURNLEY could break their transfer record for the second time in less than three weeks with the capture of Manchester United wide man Chris Eagles.

The 22-year-old is understood to have been at Turf Moor yesterday to conduct a medical with a view to completing a deal totalling £1.5million, beating the combined fee agreed for Martin Paterson last month by £200,000.

After announcing Remco van der Schaaf as his fifth summer signing on Monday, on a Bosman free transfer after his contract with Vitesse Arnhem expired, manager Owen Coyle alluded to the arrival of his sixth in the near future.

“It’s is a bit more complicated, in that there is another club interested in him, but he has real quality,” said the Clarets boss.

“We had a terrific meeting with him and his representative, obviously with permission from his club, because there would be a big fee involved in that. “ Although Coyle was unable to seal the deal before leaving for the tour of America yesterday morning, chairman Barry Kilby and operational director Brendan Flood were put on red alert for the imminent arrival of the former Watford and Sheffield Wednesday loan star.

While a physio team of Andy Mitchell and new appointment Luke Bussey have joined up with the squad for the training camp and friendlies with United Soccer Leagues sides Carolina RailHawks and Minnesota Thunder, Telegraph Sport understands physio Andy Schofield and Dr Mike McDevitt, the club doctor, carried out the medical yesterday afternoon.

Should Eagles pass, and sign a deal in time, he is expected to board a flight to the States today to meet up with his new team-mates at their Cary base in North Carolina.

A move for Hemel Hempstead-born Eagles, who can play on the right or left wing, would end a five-year spell with United, for whom he made a total of 17 senior appearances and scored one goal.

His time at Old Trafford has been punctuated by loan periods with Watford, on two separate occasions in 2005 and 2006, Sheffield Wednesday in 2005 and Dutch side NEC Nijmegen in the 2006-07 season.

He ended that season on a high by completing a comeback for United at Everton, after trailing 2-0, with a beautifully taken goal.

It was enough to keep Eagles in the frame at the start of last season, after also impressing on a pre-season tour to the Far East, where he scored two goals in four games.

But he has failed to feature in the Premier League since September last year, and his last appearance for the Red Devils came in a 1-1 draw with Roma in their Champions League Group F clash.

Eagles, who is believed to have also been targeted by Derby County, was forced to settle for a place in the reserves, and scored nine goals in 16 league and cup appearances last term.
