OWEN Coyle believes Burnley will see the best of latest signing Remco van der Schaaf.

The 29-year-old Dutch holding midfielder penned a three-year deal in time to fly out with his new team-mates for their eight-day tour of America today.

And after fending off competition from other clubs for the Bosman free transfer’s signature, including Championship rivals Cardiff City, following weeks of negotiations, Coyle has hailed his fifth summer signing as one of “undoubted quality with a tremendous pedigree”.

But he is not prepared to stop there, with a further two additions still in his sights.

Positive talks have already been held with a player who is under contract at his current club, while after making Norwegian left back Christian Kalvenes his fourth signing he announced his intention to bring another three to the club.

“I’m no different to any other manager – you’re always looking to strengthen your squad, even when you think you’ve got a full complement and every position covered, you’re always wondering whether there’s something better out there,” said Coyle, who made van der Schaaf the first of his wanted trio after the former PSV Eindhoven midfield man cut his ties with Vitesse Arnhem at the end of last season.

“We are trying to bring real quality players to the football club and in Remco was have undoubted quality.

“He is a powerful lad who is very good on the ball and a very capable player.

“Last year we were very committed to going forward and we will do that again this year, but we don’t want to leave ourselves wide open and I think Remco will patrol that area and give us a bit of protection.

“He is a defensive type of midfield player who I feel will enhance our team.

“Equally, he is 6ft 1in, he can pass a ball and put his foot in where it hurts, so he’s a terrific addition.

“He will join us now going to America, so that gives him a good chance to bond with his new team mates.

“But he has played at the top level throughout his career in Holland and I am sure he will have no trouble adjusting and complementing everything we are trying to do at this football club.”

He added: “There was interest from all over the place - from clubs bigger than ourselves - so we’re delighted to finally get him tied down.

“He is still only just turned 29, so he will be a tremendous addition to the squad and I honestly think the next three years will be his best years. Hopefully we will benefit from that.”

Van der Schaaf, meanwhile, is looking forward to playing outside of Holland for the first time in his career.

“Burnley have followed me for a long time and I had a good feeling when I came here originally and spoke to the boss,” he said.

“They gave me all the right signals and I was happy to commit to the club.

“My contract was up (at Vitesse Arnhem) this summer and I could have signed another, but I needed a new motivation, so I chose to try elsewhere.

“I had other options in Germany, but playing in England is something special and I am really looking forward to playing in the Championship at a great club.”

The Holland Under 21 international left Vitesse Arnhem, where he began his career, when he joined PSV in a deal worth three million euros.

In a three-year spell he played under former Russia boss Guus Hiddink and gained both UEFA Cup and Champions League experience, including the 2005 semi-final when they lost to AC Milan, before returning to Vitesse Arnhem.

“I played alongside some excellent players (at PSV), but in the end I decided to go back to my old club Vitesse Arnhem and that was good because it was my old city, close to my friends and family,” he said.

“When I was younger, we were a top five team, but unfortunately my second spell the club was getting bogged down wit a few financial problems and ended in mid-table.

“Now I want to make my mark (in England) and do my best. As we say in Holland, we will see where the ship ends!”
