Preston North End have been granted permission to speak to Bradford City boss Graham Alexander over the vacant managerial position at Deepdale.
North End have been searching for Paul Heckingbottom’s replacement. Heckingbottom was sacked earlier this month after a poor start to the campaign.
The club has now turned to Alexander, who made more than 350 appearances at Deepdale across two spells during his playing career.
The 54-year-old guided Bradford to promotion from League Two and finished in the play-off places last term before losing to Bolton at the semi-final stage.
The Bantams currently sit top of the League One table with five wins from their opening seven fixtures.
However, Alexander is now in talks over a potential return to Deepdale to replace Heckingbottom in the dugout.
A statement read: “Bradford City AFC can confirm we have been approached by Preston North End to speak to Graham Alexander regarding the Sky Bet Championship side’s managerial vacancy.
“Reluctantly, Bradford City has granted permission for Graham to speak to Preston North End. The club will be making no further comment at this time.”
Alexander was asked in his press conference last week about the speculation over a potential return to PNE.
“I don't think it's the first time I've been linked with Preston North End because of my history there,” he told our sister paper, the Telegraph & Argus.
“My relationship is well documented over many, many interviews for the last two decades on what happened with me at that particular club.”
Rovers defender George Pratt is on loan at Valley Parade and has made three appearances for the Bantams so far, scoring the winner at Notts County earlier this month.
Bradford have no game this weekend after their home fixture against Barnsley was postponed due to international call-ups.
