Tony Mowbray expects two signings at Blackburn Rovers after revealing two other deals fell through on transfer deadline day.
Right-back Gady Beyuku should be announced alongside an unknown addition before Tuesday's 11pm deadline.
Rovers had hoped to be more active and had four deals lined up at one stage for exciting targets. But other clubs have railroaded the deals late on and those targets are understood to have agreed deals elsewhere.
"I haven't really got involved today," Mowbray updated.
"I made some calls earlier. I think there was some very positive news earlier but I am not sure now.
"Right at the death, things change very quickly. Players are coming, then they're not and so on. I am not sure what we'll finish with.
"I would potentially say it'll be two. I was hoping at one stage it would be four but it's probably looking more like two.
"The club have worked extremely hard behind the scenes and I feel for them.
"You hear stories that deals are agreed and done; we have done all the hard work yet teams find out what the price is and take them. It's cruel sometimes."
Mowbray insists he is content, if not disappointed, by Rovers' transfer activity. He accepts the team need more depth to truly make a dent in the Championship after only making four signings this summer.
He firmly believes Rovers will be able to still have a positive season if they can get key players back from injury.
"I am ok with it," he insisted.
"We need to sort the injuries out and get those players back. We have some players with power and pace, I think Baradji can really add something.
"Everyone sees players differently. Kargbo has power and pace but I have to get him on the pitch first. I've seen him for 10 minutes in a pre-season friendly.
"They have to get fit, robust and ready for English football, to push themselves to the limits.
"I think the squad will be fine when we can sort their robustness and mentality for the games coming.
"I am not overly concerned but it is not ideal. I have felt like we need some help.
"If we are going to challenge and have a sustained push, we need a deeper squad. The injuries are coming, they're here and they'll come again down the line. Suspensions are coming.
"The team is warrior-like, but when we are bringing young boys on, we're getting weaker and other teams are getting stronger with speed and pace on the pitch.
"It's very hard to bring 17-year-olds on the pitch and try to change a man's game. They're not quite physically or mentally ready when big men come smashing into you to pay their mortgage.
"He isn't worried about a 17-year-old making his debut. It's a man's game and we have to be ready.
"We will be ok. There is enough to be competitive in the league but whether there's enough to push at the top end is another thing."
